Radio Days

After watching Radio Days last night (1987), I might have stumbled into a Woody Allen movie-watching vortex. Man, that guy is clever.

Beyond the Sea

I've been holed up in my house with some sort of sinus situation for the past couple of days. Although being sick isn't my idea of a good time, there is a great joy in the unabashed, sick-in-bed movie marathon. Watched Beyond the Sea the other night. Kevin Spacey stars as Bobby Darin (I'm a big Kevin Spacey fan now...who knew?) opposite Kate Bosworth, who makes a BABE of a Sandra Dee. Here were some of my favorite movie moments:

I was blind, but now I see

I'll admit it - I got Tumblr-fied. A few months ago, I thought it would be a good idea to hop on the Tumblr train (along with the thousands of 15/16-year-old girls with super trendy 3 column layouts). It was fun for awhile, but I miss the lack of personality. I miss writing.

I found Tumblr to be strictly photo-based, and while photos can say a thousand words, there was hardly any original content - just other people's photos of outer space, typeography ("Book a ticket and just leave", for instance), interior spaces, pretty girls with their tops off with medium-sized breasts smoking cigarettes, and miscellaneous GIFS reblogged and reblogged again. Who knew where it actually came from?

And so, I'm back. Hello! It's been awhile!

A lot has happened since my last post (exactly 7 months and a day ago).

-I quit my job at the bakery, for starters. It was just time to go. Little Light was getting bigger and it was time to take things to the next level. I made a vow to myself that I will never work in the food industry ever again.

-I ended up going to Coachella after all. The day of the festival, we bought tickets on a whim off some guy that was selling them on Craigslist. He was a liquor rep, so he threw in a bottle of vodka and a couple bottles of wine. Took a day trip to Salvation Mountain one day:

-I turned 24. My best friend, Morgan flew in from Colorado to surprise me! For the first time, I got to go out with my 3 best girls. The end of the night looked something like this:

-My cousin Dani and I went to New York to visit our cousin Andrew, who lives in Brooklyn. We volunteered selling beer at the Governors Ball Music Festival at Randall's Island and in turn, got to go to the festival for free. A photographer for style.com took a picture of me at the festival and a few days later, this collage surfaced on the website. Yes, that is Alexander Wang to the right of me:

-I bought a ukulele and learned how to play it.

-I went to Colorado for some best fran time with Morgan:

-I went to my cousin Karin's wedding. Both ladies made such beautiful brides!

-My friend, James (whom I reconnected with in New York two years after meeting him on a train in the South of France) came out to San Diego to visit me - twice. The second time, we road-tripped up to Big Sur. I had never been there before and was blown away by how gorgeous the PCH is. Here is a picture of a spot we chose for a picnic one day:

-And of course, lots and lots of Little Light'in:

So glad we're all caught up now. Hope your summers have gone fabulously!

Humpday Revival: TGIF Edition

What a gorgeous day it was in San Diego today! Almost felt like summertime!

I went thrifting 1-2-3-4 times this week. That's a new personal record! I've also been on a major arts-and-crafts kick lately. The creative juices are flowing!

Anyhoo, here are a few of my favorite looks from today's Little Light shoot. Take a gander:

Saved the best for last... not vintage, but rather, a brand-spankin-new, still-in-the-box Diana F+ Limited Edition Hong Meow Lomography camera (retails for $110). Got it for $4.50. Seriously??! Who gives this shit away?!! Almost had a conniption fit in the Brick-Brack aisle of Salvation Army on this one. Oh, the spoils of thrifting!

Coachella Smoachella

Is it just me, or does it seem that tumblr users are primarily composed of 15-year-old girls?

I've been trying to get into the whole tumblr thing, but I still don't really get it to tell you the truth. Must be a generational gap (kidding, sort of). I feel so out of the loop. I don't even really know how to use Facebook anymore. I slow down when I'm driving past the nearby high-school during lunch-time just to check out what the girls are wearing these days. I bet all of those girls have tumblrs.

Made a group decision to skip Coachella this year, even though the lineup looks killer:

In other news, I made an awesome soup last night for dinner! Pumpkin-tortilla. Click here for the recipe.
Try it out, you won't be disappointed! Keep in mind though that you might want to add a little more broth than the recipe calls for as the soup condenses down a lot after an hour of simmering. Enjoy!

Hump-day Revival

Still trying to get back in the swing of things. The past couple of weeks, I've been eating too much sugar, smoking/drinking too much, and staying up super late for days in a row. I guess that's what the holidays can do to a person.

Now, I don't really believe in making resolutions - in my opinion, it's just setting yourself up for failure. However, when you manage to get sick twice in one month, you really need to need to take a step back and start making some lifestyle changes. I really shouldn't be smoking anymore. It's a nasty habit. And it wouldn't hurt if I started exercising - not to lose weight or anything, but just to be release some endorphins every once in awhile.

Anyway, I hit up my usual thrifting spots today. I convinced Noel to come with me this time and I think he actually enjoyed himself!

One of my favorite finds of the day was this set of glazed stoneware canisters from 1978. The largest canister is unfortunately missing its lid, but the illustrations were just so pretty I had to snag em. I could always use it for a planter after all:

Next up, some more "flower power" plates, as I like to call them. I really love the whole mismatched look. I think that if I owned a restaurant, none of the dishes would match. So much more fun that way!

Came across an outstanding number of old, beat-up clipboards today. I've always been attracted to the clean and simple design of a clipboard but could never think of what to do with a collection of them... until today! Sadly, the clipboards were left behind as I didn't come up with this idea until after I got home. It's like coming up with a comeback 10 minutes too late. So frustrating. Anyway, here's the idea (which apparently, has already been done):

A clipboard frame inspiration wall of sorts! Duh. I would want to use more ragged clipboards though, like these beauties from moxie thrift:

Hope you all had a nice Wednesday!
I'm gonna try to get to bed early tonight. I refuse to be sick (again).

Hello January!

Happy New Year! Noel and I have sort of been running a bed and breakfast out of our home for the past couple days housing family and friends. It was awesome spending some quality time with my cousins. We all went geocaching for our first time the other day. If you haven't heard of geocaching before, it's a "real-world outdoor treasure hunting game" where "players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online". It's a great way to get outside and explore different areas! In fact, yesterday, we discovered a really great park just a short walk away from our house that we probably wouldn't of ventured off to if we hadn't been geocaching.

New Years Eve was pretty low-key this year. Went out to dinner at a local sushi spot in Encinitas then went out to a couple bars afterward. We got home around 1:00 and I passed out on the couch around 1:15. Spent today at my parents' house pigging out the whole afternoon.

Here's a little collage I put together of recent happenings, including a couple awesome DIY activities (we made some crayon art and a vertical garden). Tutorials on the way!
