Humpday Revival: TGIF Edition

What a gorgeous day it was in San Diego today! Almost felt like summertime!

I went thrifting 1-2-3-4 times this week. That's a new personal record! I've also been on a major arts-and-crafts kick lately. The creative juices are flowing!

Anyhoo, here are a few of my favorite looks from today's Little Light shoot. Take a gander:

Hump-day Revival

Still trying to get back in the swing of things. The past couple of weeks, I've been eating too much sugar, smoking/drinking too much, and staying up super late for days in a row. I guess that's what the holidays can do to a person.

Now, I don't really believe in making resolutions - in my opinion, it's just setting yourself up for failure. However, when you manage to get sick twice in one month, you really need to need to take a step back and start making some lifestyle changes. I really shouldn't be smoking anymore. It's a nasty habit. And it wouldn't hurt if I started exercising - not to lose weight or anything, but just to be release some endorphins every once in awhile.

Anyway, I hit up my usual thrifting spots today. I convinced Noel to come with me this time and I think he actually enjoyed himself!

One of my favorite finds of the day was this set of glazed stoneware canisters from 1978. The largest canister is unfortunately missing its lid, but the illustrations were just so pretty I had to snag em. I could always use it for a planter after all:

Next up, some more "flower power" plates, as I like to call them. I really love the whole mismatched look. I think that if I owned a restaurant, none of the dishes would match. So much more fun that way!

Came across an outstanding number of old, beat-up clipboards today. I've always been attracted to the clean and simple design of a clipboard but could never think of what to do with a collection of them... until today! Sadly, the clipboards were left behind as I didn't come up with this idea until after I got home. It's like coming up with a comeback 10 minutes too late. So frustrating. Anyway, here's the idea (which apparently, has already been done):

A clipboard frame inspiration wall of sorts! Duh. I would want to use more ragged clipboards though, like these beauties from moxie thrift:

Hope you all had a nice Wednesday!
I'm gonna try to get to bed early tonight. I refuse to be sick (again).

Fly like Paper

Can't believe it's almost mid-December... what is going on?!!

I got back from Colorado this past Tuesday. I had such a good time (despite the bitter cold - 3 degrees one day!) It was so much fun spending some serious quality time with Morgan. We laughed, we cried, we went thrifting, we went out to the bars, we spent a whole day making jewelry in her craft-room, we went to the penny arcade, we listened to Lana Del Rey - Video Games over and over again, we got matching paper-airplane tattoos. I seriously love that woman.

The next couple of weeks are going to be extremely busy for me... Not only did I pick up some extra shifts at work (so I'll basically be slinging muffins full time for a bit), I've also been working on a massive batch (the biggest batch to date) of Little Light lovelies in preparation for the holidays. Today, I will be taking pictures and posting all of the items to the store. I really put a lot of love into these beauties and I can't wait for you to see them all! Another blog post later this evening is probably in order.

Until then, here are some pictures from my Colorado trip:

She's got eyes on the back of her head

Crickets. It's been quiet on the old blog lately and I apologize for this. Things have been kinda crazy with Thanksgiving - working extra shifts at work, family in town, and everything that goes along with the aforementioned. It's been a great few days. All of my cousins were in San Diego for the holiday festivities. I've always had a pretty tight-knit family and I am so blessed to have such great relationships with my cousins. Now that we are all doing our own thing, it is so special when we all can get together in the same room.

Thanksgiving went really well this year. Usually, we have a giant Thanksgiving at my great-aunt's house. There are always so many people there that by the time I get to the turkey, it's already cold. One year, we actually ran out of food. This year, the family drifted off to their little sub-cliques, so Thanksgiving was much more intimate. I helped my mom with the cooking (and learned how to make squash casserole, so yummy!) The recipe is straight OG. My grandmother taught my mother and my mother taught me. I will share it eventually. Here's a pic of our turkey and our dinner table*:

There hasn't been a shop update in awhile, but I've finally gotten back into the swing of things. Here's a little sneak peek (and when I say "little", it's because I ran out of daylight to take pictures). This is really one of my favorite batches to date:

In other news, babygirl got a little crafty with the glue-gun last night (well, not really... just had some leftover googly eyes). I got eyes on the back of my head (sing to the Beatles - I get by):

This time off from work has been really great - rejuvenating really (almost). Only 2 more shifts and then it's off to Colorado on Friday to visit my very best friend in the whole wide world! This will be my first time back since I graduated almost a year and a half ago! So excited!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving as well. One major holiday down, one more to go!

Hump-day Revival

When it comes to thrifting, you have your good days and you have your bad days. Today, this week was very, very good. Here's why:

1. Three fabulous hats:

2. Four snap-button Western shirts for my mayun for .50 cents a pop!

3. This beautiful white eyelet dress:

Check out the buttons in the back on this beauty:

4. These cut-offs. (I guess good things came in 4's this week!)

Like my DIY scalloped shorts? Check out this super easy no-sew tutorial to make your own!

And yes, I finally tracked down those American flag cut-off Levis shorts that I've been drooling over for at least a year (at Kobey's swap meet of all places). There they were, just sitting on top of a big pile of clothes. I didn't even have to dig for them (like I had to for the Western shirts). I was so excited when I saw them, but if there's anything I've learned from watching American Pickers, it's to not show your cards. I casually picked them up and briefly inspected them for holes, stains, and/or tears. There weren't any. I was even more excited, but I had to keep my poker face on. I draped them over my arm and continued browsing for a few minutes until I couldn't take it anymore - I had to own these shorts and I had to own them now.

I couldn't wait to start the negotiating process with the vendor. "How much are you thinking on these?" I asked. (You see, instead of asking "How much are these", you have to ask, "How much are you thinking on these". This phrasing automatically sets you up for non-awkward negotiating.)

"Oh, those?" the vendor began (as he looked me up and down). "Those belong with you. You can have them for a dollar."

Being a girl also helps in getting what you want for the price that you want. All you have to do is smile.

OK, where were we?

Ah, yes,

5. This 80s prom dress:

6. Another little girl's sailor dress (I just can't help myself):

7. A pastel plaid button-down with a peter-pan collar. Bliss. Wore it yesterday (and today too):

8. Last but not least:

The holy grail. Fourteen words: Size-Seven-and-a-Half-FRYE-Banana-Leather-Campus-Boots-For-Under-Twenty-Dollars. Holy shit. Really?

How did I luck out so hard this week??

I guess when it rains, it pours!

Have a lovely evening!

Fury Duty

Today (my day off from work), I fulfilled my civic duty and reported to the Vista Court Complex for jury duty. I've reported to jury duty before, so I knew what to expect and brought some reading material. The last time I showed up, we were all dismissed before noon. This time, my name was called.

Luckily, I was not chosen as a juror, however, I did have to endure a painstakingly long voir dire. I tried not to snicker at the name of one of the potential jurors (Gaylord), not to mention the kid who "worked at a mushroom factory" (huh?).

By the time I was dismissed, it was 2:00. The only good that came of the day was that I got to take advantage of my foreign surroundings and scour some thrift stores in the area.

Let me tell you, it's been slim pickings lately ... well, at least in the clothing department. Today seemed to turn out to be a textile sort of day.

My first stop was at an antique store next to a Goodwill. In the back room, everything was on sale. I dug through a big cardboard box of old linens and eventually, these embroidered beauties materialized:

When I uncover handmade goods at a thrift store, I can't help myself - I must rescue them. It makes me sad to see an embroidered handkerchief or a crocheted blanket collecting dust on a rack when I know, from a personal account, just how much time and love goes into making things with your hands.

Like these hangers, for instance:

Or this quilted swatch of fabric/soon-to-be pillow-case:

Or this table-cloth:

What can I say? I am an advocate of the arts (and crafts).

Announcement

There is some good news and there is some bad news.

The bad news first: The name, "Lazybones Vintage" is no more. Coincidentally, (yes, that was indeed some sarcastic italicization) the name is in use by Audrey Kitching. She's got the domain name and everything.

I know that it's partially my fault. I should have shelled out the $12 and claimed the URL last June when I came up with the name. It saddens me because the 1933 Tin Pan Alley song, "Lazybones" has become a "standard" in my family since the passing of my great grandfather. It's one of those songs that we sing at family gatherings (What? You're telling me your family doesn't break into song?) It was so fitting for a vintage store name because it has been a song that has been passed down from generation to generation, which is what vintage is all about.

It's ironic because Johnny Mercer, the song's lyricist, was a real-deal Southern boy who resented Tin Pan Alley for rejecting songs that reflected traditional Southern vernacular in favor of music about the South that was written by lyricists that had never even been there before. The song "Lazybones" was written in protest against the Southern posers that were swiping his steeze. He lays down the law at the beginning of the song, declaring authenticity, "Long as there is chicken gravy on your rice".

But enough wallowing.

The good news is, there is a new name:

I chose the name for a few reasons. First, I love myself a good alliteration. Secondly, the name references a song from the same era as Lazybones. It was important to me to maintain the nostalgic quality of the name. I also love that the song is about shining and expressing yourself, which ties into vintage clothes quite nicely I think.

So there you have it.

The official Little Light Vintage website should be posted sometime later today!
